Have you ever been present at the birth of a child? If you’re a parent, you probably have. For sure if you’re a mom, you were of course there, but these days, most fathers are allowed to be in the room when their babies are born. One young girl had an emotional moment when she had the opportunity to not only be in the birthing room while her mother was giving birth, but she got to actually deliver her baby brother. Dede Carraway was in labor and ready to have her baby. However, she had no clue just how eventful her son’s birth was going to be.
At the last minute, the OB-GYN suggested a slight change of procedure. Knowing that it was going to be a routine birth, the doctor allowed for something that Dede never dreamed of before. The woman already had a birth plan that included her 12-year-old daughter Jacee Dellapena being in the room, but the doctor had an even better idea. At first, the middle schooler was upset because she’s short and was afraid she wouldn’t be able to see it. “I started crying because I thought I wasn’t going to get to see him be born because I was too short,” the girl told WBTV.
That’s when the doctor got an idea. Dr. Wolf asked the young girl if she was up for doing something she had never done in her life before: He offered her the chance to help him deliver the baby herself, or rather, help him, the doctor, deliver the baby. Although Jacee didn’t have any experience delivering babies, she was excited about the chance, and her mother was concerned, too. However, the doctor was confident they could pull it off and he reassured the family. Jacee took her place in front of the doctor and did her part to welcome her little brother into the world.
Dede was totally OK with it as long as her husband, Zack, didn’t mind. In an interview with MSNewNow, Jacee said, “I actually delivered him, like, he let me actually push down and pull the baby out…. I was like, wow, like I’ve played fake doctor before, but this is the real thing, this is is the real deal. I was really nervous.” The little boy was born weighing 7 pounds and 5 ounces and they named him Cayson Carraway. Jacee says it’s an experience she’ll never forget for the rest of her life. She even got to cut the umbilical cord as her father stood by and captured the priceless moment.
Dede said that it was “very emotional” and seeing Jacee enjoying it so much helped her get through the birth. “Dr. Wolfe actually put her hands on the inside of his and allowed her to do the entire delivery,” she said. “We were all very emotional and it was like no feeling I’ve ever felt. It’s not every day your eldest child at 12 years old gets to deliver your last child.”
