The experience of raising a child with harlequin ichthyosis is detailed in A Mother’s Love.
Surprising finding: A rare diagnosis
The journey of parenthood is a profound and transformative experience. Expectant parents are filled with joy, excitement, and a touch of apprehension as they eagerly await the arrival of their child. The deepest desire of every parent is to welcome a healthy and thriving baby into the world. However, life can sometimes unfold in unexpected ways and present challenges that require unwavering love and commitment.
Jennie Wilklow, a resident of Highland, New York, embarked on her journey to motherhood with boundless enthusiasm. She and her husband were impatiently awaiting the arrival of their little girl Anna, their hearts overflowing with love and dreams of a future together. Throughout the nine months of pregnancy, regular ultrasounds and doctor visits provided reassurance that their baby was healthy and thriving, never hinting at a surprise diagnosis that would change the course of their lives forever.
Anna’s Birth: A Watershed Moment
Jennie had a C-section to deliver Anna at 34 weeks. The medical staff told her the baby was beautiful, which reassured the new mother. Another sign that everything seemed to be okay with her baby was hearing Anna cry. But when her husband arrived, his eerie silence and worried expression raised suspicion.
“I searched for more details because I was disturbed by my husband’s silence. It’s terrible, he repeatedly insisted. How did it make sense?”
Jennie told the story of Cafe Mom in their lecture. She discovers that Anna has been identified as suffering from an unusual skin disorder known as harlequin ichthyosis, which causes the skin to harden into diamond plates that are separated by deep fissures.
Harlequin ichthyosis is an unusual skin disease.
Within seconds of her birth, her skin hardened as medical staff desperately tried to help her. Cracks caused by hardening all over her body resulted in open wounds, Jennie recounted. Doctors weren’t sure Anna would survive, but the little girl overcame the odds. The ecstatic mother gushed, “She was beautiful in the purest form.”
Unfortunately, there is no cure for harlequin ichthyosis, so the only treatment option is strict skin care, including daily bathing and frequent moisturizing.
“I bathed her for many hours every day and used Vaseline every few hours. The hardest part for me was not being able to dress her in the clothes I imagined,” admitted Jennie.
Building Awareness: A Mother’s Mission
By posting pictures of Anna on her Instagram account @harlequindiva, Jennie raised awareness of harlequin ichthyosis. Her contributions give readers a daily insight into the hardships and difficulties of raising a child with this disability. “As the picture of perfection, Anna has won everyone’s hearts. Every success is a cause for worldwide joy and daily care is effortless when she is there,” said Jennie.
“I understand now that I was gifted with Anna because of the immense love I carried in my heart for her,” she said with pain. Anna and I were to be parents, Anna my daughter. Together, we want to redefine true beauty for the whole world.
Proof of commitment and love of parents
Anna is privileged to have parents who are committed to giving her a typical childhood, and she is absolutely beautiful in her own special way.
