A Chocolate A Day Can Help Your Brain Function, Researchers Say

Chocolate, glorious chocolate. Who doesn’t love the sweet, delicious taste?

Here, some welcome news for sweet-toothed chocolate fans.

New studies find that it’s not just delectable, but it can also benefit the human brain.

You don’t need us to tell you where to get your hands on chocolate. Fudge, cookies, cake…we already know there’s something for everybody out there!

And, we’ve all heard that fruit and veg on a regular basis can be good for our health. But as per recent studies, chocolate may also be another good means of staying healthy.

Researchers at Italy’s L’Aquila University found that chocolate, eaten regularly, can help prevent cognitive deterioration.

The antioxidant- and iron-containing dessert features heavily as a treat and in desserts across the world. What the research says is that this molecular mix contains flavanols that have positive brain impacts over time.

Flavanols occur naturally, and the researchers demonstrated they boost concentration, enhance memory, and assist our brains to take information in.

The study’s author Valentina Socci writes, “Regular intake of cocoa and chocolate could indeed provide beneficial effects on cognitive functioning over time”.

In the scientific journal, she says “There are potential side effects of eating cocoa and chocolate.”

“Those are generally linked to the caloric value of chocolate, some inherent chemical compounds of the cocoa plant such as caffeine and theobromine, and a variety of additives we add to chocolate such as sugar or milk.”

While it's definitely no reason to give up on the fruit and veg, other nutritionists emphasize that a little bit of chocolate daily can have advantages.

Dr. London, a nutrition doctor, says: “Having an ounce of chocolate per day, or about 150 to 200 calories, has a number of different benefits…While no food is a miracle-worker, I’m a huge proponent of treating yourself with chocolate daily.”

What’s the takeaway? Don’t feel scared of treating yourself a little each day with some chocolate! It might even help before that big exam or that work project when you need a brain-booster!
