How A New Jersey Teen Battled the Odds and Received 17 College Offers

You must never give up on life, even when all the chips are stacked against you. With hard work and dedication towards a goal, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.

We have all heard something along these lines, right? But sometimes it takes a real-life story to give us the motivational kick we need. The following story of triumph against all odds will hopefully inspire you to take your challenges head on.

17-year-old Dylan, born in Trinidad, came to the United States aged just 7 with his family. Dylan grew up around poverty, with him, his twin brothers and his single mother, Khadine Philip moving in and out of homelessness for years.

Dylan’s twin brothers also suffered from serious heart conditions which put further stress on the family. However, Dylan refused to play the victim and allow his situation determine his future.

A senior at Henry Snyder High School, NJ, he put in the work which saw him inducted into the honour society and become class president. His achievements didn’t stop there.

Dylan has now been accepted into 17 colleges!

Speaking on his achievement, Dylan said;

“I have to have a lot of determination, there’s been a lot of people saying, ‘You’re not going to achieve this. Me getting these acceptance letters verifies what I have been saying: that I can do it and I will do it.”

Dylan cites his mother’s courage as the source of his determination to succeed. Mother, Khadine, had reached out to the non-profit ‘Woman Rising’ for help with her family’s situation.

Woman Rising provide help for single mothers and their family. They provided Dylan and his family with housing and a safe place to study. Speaking on his mother’s courage, Dylan said;

“Putting herself out there like that, that basically made me more determined to never let us get back in that situation again,”

Dylan has decided on the Collage of New Jersey, where he will study political science.

The soon to be 18-year-old has battled the odds and put himself into a position to accomplish his future goals. If this doesn’t inspire you I don’t know what will! Please give this story as share to show Dylan some love and give others the spark of inspiration they might be looking for.
