We expect nothing less than good care for our children when they head off to school for the day, and the same applies to nursery, preschool, and kindergarten.
After all, isn’t that part of a teacher’s job?
Well, it’s what one kid’s parents reckoned when they sent their little boy, 6, to Ohio-based Riverdale School.
Sadly, things didn’t turn out that way.
It was a regular school day, and Ian was on his way to the toilet. All of a sudden, Barb Williams, one of the school's teachers, stepped in his path.
The preschooler's mom and dad say that the boy's school attempted to play down what happened next.
Yet when they saw the CCTV footage, Ian’s parents say that the serious nature of the whole affair became instantly apparent. And, they could see exactly how Ian came to return home with bruises, scared to go back to school.
The video from the school shows Williams grasping Ian’s face, then shoving him against the school wall. Next, she grabs his shirt and proceeds to lift the little boy up, according to Cleveland19 News.
Ian’s parents were naturally shocked and appalled.
The teacher received a 10-day unpaid suspension before returning to Riverdale School once more. Understandably, Anthony Nelson and wife Autumn were not satisfied.
They were aghast at how lightly Williams had been treated.
Ian’s dad, Anthony, said: “I would consider what would happen to myself, if I were to do that to her.”
He added, “If I were to do that to her, I would go to jail.”
Elaborating, Mr. Nelson said: “We thought it was just a little incident that happened, and that’s what the school made it out to sound like…and then all of a sudden we get this video today and this is just outrageous.” Anthony finished.
Little Ian had been shoved against the said wall with such force that his back was bruised, report Autumn and Anthony.
“He’s scared of her,” Ian’s mom shared.
“Even going to the school next year or the year after, he will still have to see her if she is present in the building. That’s probably going to scare him.”
However, Riverdale School’s superintendent and head teacher weren’t prepared to sack Williams. Reportedly, they believe she was ‘very good’ at her job.
Mr. Hoffman, the district's apologetic superintendent, tried to reach Ian's parents to express regret for the incident. In the meantime, Ian's school has lodged reports with law enforcement, the CPS, and the Education Department.
Once the video had gone public, Williams stepped down and faced legal charges. She did not contest these and received a fine of $250 plus costs.
We are happy Ian's teacher faced up to her behavior, but still, feel Riverdale School ought to have defended him and sacked her instantly.
Kids shouldn’t be scared about attending class. Teachers like this shouldn’t be let near kids at all.
