Having someone to take to homecoming is super important for students, so left dateless can really crush your self-esteem.
Arizona-based Daniel Rivas has all the dreams and hopes of most kids of 17 and has Down Syndrome.
He aspires to graduate from university and work as a chef. Until that day, however, he just hopes to have a pleasant time at high school. This meant having a date for homecoming.
Unfortunately, Daniel had a hard time making this happen. He was rejected every time he asked a girl to go with him.
As Daniel was looking forward to the dance so much, his mother Tonya also felt the same.
That made not having a date, a problem for both of them.
Having asked a few girls, only to be rejected, the rumor of his situation reached Kylie Fronius, a 10th-grade student.
On learning Daniel had nobody to go to homecoming with, Kylie volunteered.
Soon, she approached Daniel and asked if he’d take her to the dance. He was overjoyed at her proposal.
“Someone took the time to take my son to homecoming,” Daniel’s mom, an emotional Tonya, shared.
“Words can’t even describe what I’m feeling right now,” his mom explained, shocked at Kylie’s thoughtful offer.
Tonya was blown away by Kylie’s kind proposal.
“It’s not that Daniel has a disability. It’s Kylie didn’t see any disability. That is what your heart wants as a mom.”
Nonetheless, there were more surprises in wait for Daniel. The internet soon found out about Kylie’s actions, followed quickly by reporters at Fox 5.
On hearing the tale, the news outlet broadcasted the story, and the pair stole hearts across the nation.
“I don’t think of kids that have a disability,” said Kylie to Fox 5reporters. “I don’t think of them as being different,” the girl said.
“I hope I can make his night fun.”
Daniel and Kylie were not prepared for something even bigger that was awaiting them.
Fox 5 has a Surprise Squad that recognizes kind actions by good people, preparing them huge surprises to acknowledge their kindness. The Surprise Squad figured the couple hadn’t yet received enough attention.
Touched by Kylie’s kindness, the crew were planning something reallyspecial.
Homecoming night came around, and who should approach the teens but Surprise Squad host, Monica Jackson.
First, they were greeted by a limo, which would chauffeur them throughout the night.
Once the Rolls had picked them up, Daniel and Kylie were taken to a high-end meal at a nearby bistro.
The celebrity treatment didn’t end there, though.
The excitement and happiness definitely featured some tears, but clearly, they were from happiness, as Fox 5 kept up the surprises.
All of a sudden, there was an interruption.
“We’re not done,” Surprise Squad’s Monica told them, coming onstage.
To top it all off, the crew revealed their biggest surprise—they’d arrange for Daniel, Kylie, and both of the students’ families to visit Disneyland.
And to help Daniel achieve his hopes and dreams, he also received $10k in scholarship funding from the generous United Nissan.
Then, they shocked Daniel’s date Kylie by giving her a car—brand new.
“All you had to do was watch the (original) news story that aired, and you saw a young lady with a huge heart, and she was inspirational,” Mr. Forman explained, United Nissan's owner.
Sometimes, the smallest thoughtful actions have huge unexpected impacts, as those around us feel inspired to do the same.
Sweet Kylie only ever wanted to be kind, but her example is a great example for all of us.
