Sometimes we get along, sometimes we fight and drive each other crazy, but most of the time we really love our brothers and sisters and life is not the same when we lose that connection whatever the reason may be.
According to science having a sibling can actually have a very positive impact on a person´s life, in what way? It makes your life much more exciting and healthy.
The results of the study which was carried out in 2010 were published in The Journal of Family Psychology. It involved examining 400 families with multiple siblings; one of whom was between the ages of 10-14. Having a sister promoted positive mental health in their siblings.
The results also showed that these brothers and sisters also had a greater capacity to empathize, communicate, and resolve conflicts. Laura Padilla-Walker, a professor in the university’s School of Family Life and the study’s lead author, said that even with all the fighting that may occur, “as long as they have affection, the positive will win out.”
Siblings fight a lot but there is nothing to worry about. They have to learn to regulate emotions, a very important that can help anyone live a better more balanced life. This is not the only skill you can develop if you have a sibling; things like communication, compromise and negotiation are learned maybe unconsciously when there is an older or young sibling in your life.
The bond created between siblings is unique and special, it´s a very close friendship. It is proved that strong social ties may help you live longer, that´s because caring about friends and family inspires us to take better care of ourselves, there are people who need us and we need those people too.
Just think about all the inside jokes, the childhood memories, the anecdotes and secrets that you share with your sibling, it is a unique connection, it makes a lot of sense that having a brother or a sister can have a very positive impact on your life, all the things that you learn and share throughout life are priceless.
