All good deeds leave a mark in the world, a mark that will never be forgotten; on the contrary, acts of kindness are always remembered and appreciated. It is not every day that people do things out of love and compassion but when it happens it´s good to share the story and celebrate it.
Kiersten Miles is a 22 year old woman who is pursuing a career in Special Education at Towson University. In order to pay for her career Kiersten got a job as a babysitter to start saving money to offset her student debt.
George and Farra Rosko hired Kiersten to take care of their baby girl Talia and her two older siblings.
Baby girl Talia had a rare life threatening liver disease known as Bilary Atresia, a condition that causes the liver´s ducts to become backed up with bile. Her liver´s central bile duct was destroyed and bile was building up. Talia´s skin was yellow and the whites of her eyes where grey.
Her liver wasn´t working, it couldn´t get rid of toxins. Doctors told George and Farra that Talia might not live past her second birthday.
Weeks after Kiersten started looking after Talia, she started thinking if there was a way to help with Talia´s condition. She said she started doing some research and read about living organ donation.
“I was just curious, I guess” Kiersten said. She thought she might be a good candidate for organ donation because she knew her blood type, which was 0, is compatible with all other blood types. She talked about it with her mother and then told the Rosko family about her idea…
George and Farra, couldn´t believe what Kiersten was actually saying to them. They barely knew her, she had been working for them for only three weeks and she wanted to donate a portion of her liver to their baby girl Talia.
“I was very taken aback,” George Rosko said. “I didn’t know that she was this selfless — I’ve come to find out that this is who she is. She really is an angel on earth; I know that sounds silly, but she really is.”
Talia was put on a transplant list, but it is always very difficult to find a donor for such a small child, it can take a lot of time.
The day arrived and doctors removed a portion of Kiersten’s liver to implant it in Talia. Fortunately both surgeries went well.
“Once they had taken [the piece of] the liver out, they told us,” Farra said. “That’s a pretty powerful moment. When it was happening, it was surreal.”
“We didn’t even know her,” Farra said of Kiersten. “I thought it was wonderful that she offered, but I didn’t really think it would go through. It’s not something that people do every day.”
After the surgery Kiersten was happy and relieved at the same time. Kiersten and Talia saw each other some days later, Talia looked at her babysitter and smiled.
“When I saw Talia it just reminded me why I did it all”
Since that day, Kiersten has been receiving a lot of love and support from friends, family and strangers alike and is easy to understand why. Her selfless act saved a child´s life! What this young woman did is truly amazing and admirable.
