It was a very special day for Mikayla, she was getting married with the love of her life and she wanted to share this special moment with her family and friends. Unfortunately not all of her family was present…
Her dad, David Poling, a marine and probation officer, died in the line of duty 10 years ago, he was chasing a suspect and when the suspect run away, David leaped from a 15 foot high bank into the water and his body never was found. Mikayla was very close with her father and she missed him every day.
The day of her wedding Mikayla carried a very special bouquet, she wanted to paid homage to her dad, the bouquet contained a medallion inscribed with the words “Walk with me today, Daddy”. She made sure her dad was present in different ways as well; his boots and Marine Corps portrait had a special seat in the audience.
The part where the bride shares a dance with her father is very important in any wedding. Sadly Mikayla didn´t have the chance have that dance, but her father´s former colleagues who were guests at the wedding did something they knew would mean a lot to Mikayla:
Each former police colleague stepped in dressed in uniform and danced with the bride, they danced to the song “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. They had been in civilian clothes as guests at the wedding by got changed for the heartbreaking surprise. Mikayla´s new husband Dakota, who also works in the Sheriff’s department, the photographer and the DJ were the only ones who knew about the surprise!
Mikayla was walked down the aisle by her stepdad and said: “One of the police officers – Matt – was actually my dad’s best friend. I was full of emotion. I never expected anything like that to happen. It was a real surprise. I was nine-years-old when my dad died and we were very close. Every girl wants their dad there on their wedding day to walk them down the aisle and for the dance.”
It was the perfect wedding present for Mikayla, it was the best way to honor the memory of her father. It was a very emotional moment for her and she will always be thankful for it! Hope this young happy couple has a life full of joy!
