It was just like any other normal day for Chermaine Keevy, a woman from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It was early in the morning and she was walking her sausage dog Georgie.
Suddenly the dog started barking non-stop, at first the 63-year-old woman thought all the barking was because of a cat so she got worried and decided to get on her hands and knees to look inside the gutter. She was totally shocked when she realized she could hear a baby crying from deep inside the drain…
She flagged down Cornie Vilijoen’s a passing car, the driver stopped and decided to help. He grabbed a steel bar from his car and they used it to remove the concrete cover that was covering the storm drain so they could come inside.
Vilijoen dropped 6-feet down into the drain and saw a colony of red ants:
“When I got into the hole it was higher than my head and it was so narrow that I had to go down on my knees and I couldn’t bend over so had to feel down for the baby below,”he said
“The red ants were stinging my legs but then I felt this baby’s leg and then saw the baby and I realized that this was a crime scene so I took a flash picture and handed my phone up to Charmaine.”
He didn´t know if the baby was injured so he tried to pick her up carefully because she was very small: “I just wanted to hold her for a while but I knew that she needed urgent medical help,” he said.
They didn´t hesitate to call the emergency services and when the ambulance arrived the baby was rushed to the hospital.
The baby was found naked with its umbilical cord attached and was treated for hypothermia and respiratory problems. Police said that the only way the baby could have gotten down there is if someone removed the concrete cover and placed the child there.
The police also said “There is a possibility that the person who did this may have come from outside the area and placed the child there. We are appealing for witnesses and the mother of this baby to come forward.”
If it hadn´t been for the dog barking to let her owner know there was something down there, the baby may have never been found!
“I honestly believe I was meant to find that baby by God as I usually take a different route on my dog walk but for some reason went another way.”“I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of a plan and a purpose for that little girls' life – it is a miracle without a doubt.”
The other rescuer, Cornie Vilijoen said “The baby is OK at the moment but picked up a bit of a viral infection because of exposure to the cold but she's a fighter and getting stronger.”“She is not out of the woods yet but she is breathing on her own now and the nurses say she will make it' he said.”
The baby weighed 3.09kg, Hospital staff have called her Grace April and she has become a celebrity on the baby ward! What a miracle! Once again, man’s best friend is saving a life!
