American Airlines Flight From New York to New Delhi Diverted to Rome – Here’s Why

Passengers on an American flight found themselves on an unplanned stopover in Rome after officials received a security concern that triggered a swift response from authorities.

An American Airlines flight en route from New York to New Delhi was unexpectedly diverted to Rome on Sunday, February 23, due to a possible security issue, the airline confirmed in a statement.

Flight 292 departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport and was scheduled to arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport when authorities received a bomb threat via email. The alert prompted immediate action, though officials later determined the threat was unfounded.

As a precaution, Italian Air Force fighter jets were dispatched to escort the aircraft safely to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport. A video shared on social media captured the tense moment, showing two fighter jets flanking the plane as it descended for the unscheduled landing. Fire trucks lined one side of the runway, ready for any emergency response.

The aircraft touched down without incident, and all 199 passengers, along with 15 crew members, were taken to the terminal for security screening while authorities conducted a thorough inspection. American Airlines reassured travelers, stating that “safety and security are our top priorities” and thanking passengers for their patience.

Following a detailed search by law enforcement, the airline confirmed that the aircraft had been “cleared to re-depart.” However, Indian authorities required an additional inspection before the plane could continue its journey to New Delhi.

Due to crew rest regulations, the flight was scheduled to remain in Rome overnight before resuming travel the following day.

Neeraj Chopra, a passenger onboard, recalled the moment the captain announced a change in “security status” about three hours before their expected arrival in New Delhi. Initially, he described the cabin atmosphere as calm.

However, when the captain later informed passengers that fighter jets would be escorting them to Rome, the situation felt more serious. “I felt a little panic of, okay, what's going on here?” Chopra told the AP. “There's got to be like something bigger going on here.”

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the origin of the bomb threat, but the incident remains under investigation.

For many passengers onboard Flight 292, the first sign of trouble came when the captain announced a “diversion due to a security issue.” Jonathan Bacon, a 22-year-old from Dayton, Ohio, recalled fixating on the flight tracker in front of him, watching as the plane veered sharply away from New Delhi and turned back toward Rome.

With no steady internet connection for most of the flight, passengers were largely in the dark. Only brief moments of connectivity provided snippets of early reports, but no clear answers emerged before landing.

Once on the ground, the process was far from over. Bacon described a lengthy security screening inside the terminal, where passengers and their belongings were thoroughly checked. The heightened procedures, especially for arriving travelers, made the experience feel even more intense.

More than two hours later, he and his friend were still waiting for their checked luggage, which was also undergoing additional security inspections. “It was definitely the longest flight to Europe I’ve ever taken,” he quipped.

Despite the unexpected disruption, operations at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport remained unaffected. Airport spokesperson Roberto Rao confirmed that Flight AA292 had requested a diversion at approximately 2 p.m. local time.

“We immediately agreed and organized a safe landing,” Rao told NBC News. While he was not informed of the specific security concern, he noted that the situation appeared serious enough to warrant a diversion but not urgent. “We received the alert when the plane was over the Caspian Sea, a three-hour flight from Rome,” he explained.

As authorities continued their investigations, passengers were left waiting—eager to resume their journey but grateful for a safe landing.
