A tragic plane crash forever changed the lives of Reba McEntire and her musical family took place 32 years ago, and this year is the anniversary of that event.
On March 16, 1991, a tragic accident took the lives of eight of the well-known singer’s bandmates and crew members; they were all accomplished musicians and devoted friends.
McEntire used social media to thank the individuals who have had such a lasting impact on the music industry. On the flight from San Diego to Indiana, a tragic accident happened when one of the plane’s wings collided with a boulder atop Otay Mountain.
While the rest of the group went on an excursion, Reba stayed in the hotel with her husband Narvel and stylist because she was feeling under the weather at the time.
Along with Paula Kaye Evans and Terry Jackson, tour members Chris Austin, Joey Cigainero, and Jim Hammon, the tour manager, also passed away.
“Their passion for music and their incredible stage presence continue to inspire us all,” In a tribute video uploaded to Instagram, McEntire said. This presentation includes a performance recording of the group, which serves as an emotional tribute to their talent and cohesion.
Reba keeps the band’s memory alive by bringing up the subject at least once a year.
She spoke with Oprah Winfrey about the incident and its immediate aftermath in a 2012 interview.
She recalled the unsettling moment, saying, “When we received the notification, Narvel went to meet our pilot, who revealed the devastating news.
Narvel came back to our hotel room in the wee hours of the morning with the tragic news that one of the planes had crashed.
I asked, ‘Are they okay?’ To which he replied, ‘I don’t think so.’ I pressed further, ‘But you’re not sure?’ And he softly said, ‘I don’t think so.’”
May we never forget the imprint these extraordinary individuals left on Reba McEntire’s career and music history as we honor their lives.
